Royal Air Maroc inspires Africa…

Last Wednesday, January 16th, Royal Air Maroc and the African Communication Network hosted Royal Air Maroc Inspires Africa kick off cocktail party at L Lounge in Harlem.  There were 40 guests in attendance excited to begin planning the 2-day event that will be taking place in June. Royal Air Maroc Inspires Africa was created by Dame Babou, President of African Communication Network and supported by Abdel Khalil, Manager of Royal Air Maroc North America, to celebrate New York City’s African community.

Royal Air Maroc Inspires Africa was developed to empower the African youth of America. Wednesday night, team leaders (Sadibou Sylla, Ambroise Ngande and myself) presented our respective proposed activities. Mr Khalil Abdel gave the opening statement and Chica Onyeani, from The African Sun Times also shared a few kind words to Dame Babou for his creativity and Abdel Khalil for his support. Afterwards the attendees selected which division they wanted to support. Ideas were flying, contact information exchanged, the planning process officially begun.

Education = Science

  • Led by Sadibou Sylla.
  • Purpose of integrating science into the event was to remind us that Africa needs innovation and to encourage the new generation to think outside the box. In the future, subject of competition may involve improving the state of the environment in rural Africa
  • Organizing a robotic contest for 2 age groups: 9-13 year olds and 14 to 18 years old.

Sports = Soccer academy

  • Led by Sadibou Sylla.
  • Purpose is to show African youth that with discipline and structure, one can reach beyond social constructs, expectations and dreams.

Sports = Superstar exhibit game

  • The three of us are working on securing high profile soccer players to come and hit the ball for the amusement of African youngster in New York. Here we want our youth to realize that the background of a person does not define his or her future. This will ultimately support the soccer academy.
  • International, professional soccer players such as Yaya Toure, Demba Ba, Didier Drogba, Younes Belhanda, Nicolas N’koulou, Alain Traore, Samuel Eto, just to name a few, will be invited to come and play a gala game for us and spend a moment autographing, talking and snapping pictures for children, if their respective schedule permits it.

Fashion = Showcase

  • Led by Aissata Ba.
  • Purpose to expose the creative talented young designers of the African community who are too often underrepresented in the fashion world.
  • They will showcase their best designs and build their portfolio. The designs may be paired with pageant queens.

Entertainment = Music & dance party

  • Led by Aissata Ba.
  • DJ Birane (if you don’t know him yet…you are sooooo 2000late – he is internationally known for playing the music of the 4 cardinal points of Africa) will spin. Well known performers such as the Nubians, Magique systeme and Toofan are names we are looking into.
  • A night of cultural diversity mixing food, play, fashion, music and love.

Royal Air Maroc inspires Africa so stay tuned, for more information. This is going to be huge. This is going to be immensely fun, attractively glamorous and highly uplifting.  A “One of its kind” that YOU can not miss!!!

Until Then, stay fabulous!
