It was indeed “Too Big to Miss”. African Diaspora Award 2012 ceremony was filled with meaningful messages, love sharing and laughs to celebrate African men and women excelling outside their respective country and the African continent. Fashion, entertainment, scholars, entrepreneurship, no one was forgotten.
The Applause Africa initiative took place last saturday December 8th at the School of visual Art on 23 street, Chelsea, NYC. It was very nice to see all these distinguished men and women answering the call. The guests came alone, in groups or as couples but it did not matter since the mingling made us all part of the same big group of people. Many of the awarded guests expressed the uniqueness of the event and shared that the award they had just received, was in fact their first. They seemed very much validated by their own. It was an uplifting experience one could feel all around the SVA room.
The honorees included Farai Simoyi as the designer of the year, Dr. Mahmood Mamdani for the scholar of the year, Flaviana Matata as the Face of Africa, Les Nubians as the musicians of the year, the Whitaker group as the company of the year, Angelique Kidjo for lifetime achievement, Liya Kebede for humanitarian of the year award and many others.
Below are picture of crowd who came out beautifully dressed to support, enjoy, applause and laugh. They certainly add a great deal to the overwhelming success of this event.
Aren’t we looking sharp???……….lol that’s right!
The pictures stop there but the fun continued all night. The after party at Stitch Bar gathered many more people and the night got even hotter…. We ate, we cheered and danced on sounds of world music.
Can’t wait for the African Diaspora Award 2012. Bravo Applause Africa!
